How Emsella Works

Emsella uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy to stimulate the motor neurons that control the pelvic floor muscles. This causes the muscles to contract and relax repeatedly at a depth and intensity most people cannot achieve through voluntary effort.

Mechanism of action

What these contractions support

These repeated deep contractions support:

The process is similar to intensive resistance training for the pelvic floor, delivered in a short, consistent session without requiring the patient to perform the contractions themselves.

The treatment chair

Emsella is delivered from a seated position. The patient sits fully clothed on the chair while the device generates the electromagnetic field that stimulates the pelvic floor. There are no probes and no internal devices.

A single session lasts approximately 28 minutes, and normal activities can resume immediately afterward.

Common questions

How many contractions does one Emsella session produce?

A single 28-minute Emsella session typically generates more than 11,000 pelvic floor muscle contractions. These are supramaximal contractions, meaning they are stronger than most people can produce voluntarily.

Do I have to do anything during the session?

No. Emsella does not require the patient to perform the contractions. The device stimulates the motor nerves directly, so the muscles contract without voluntary effort.

What is a supramaximal contraction?

A supramaximal contraction is a muscle contraction stronger than one a person can achieve by voluntary effort. Emsella produces these by triggering action potentials in the motor nerves that control the pelvic floor.

Is Emsella like exercise for the pelvic floor?

The process is similar to intensive resistance training for the pelvic floor. It is delivered in a short, consistent session without requiring the patient to perform the contractions themselves.

Considering Emsella?

A consultation is the best way to determine whether Emsella is appropriate for your situation. Mid Florida Endocrine, led by Victor Matthews, MD, is located in Winter Garden, Florida.
